My Year 2023 in very short

 Well, the year was not quite as easy, as we hoped, it would be…

Very positive is, that we both feel very much at home in "our" rented house in Buchs. So, that part went fine, even though we still are not quite finished with decorating, but are satisfied. Most important is our English style sitting- and dining- room, see attached pictures.



And yes, we did go to our cabin a few times. Here a blog from January 2023, when I was there on my own for a few days:

Then, end of May, Sabines Mother Beatrice (91) fell and "made" a femoral neck fracture. And that was the beginning of a long and somehow sad story:

We immediately took our mobile home and spent some weeks on a Camping close to Basel, to comfort Beatrice as good as possible. After some weeks she was able to go back to her home for elderly people. But not really for long, End of July she had to go to Hospital again. She had a swollen arm and needed oxygen to help her breezing. Finally, August 8th she passed away. It was sad but was good for all parts. She would not have recovered and her joy of life had left her.

So for the next weeks we (mainly Sabine) were again very busy in Basel. We had to empty the room at home for elderly people within five(!) days. And in the mean time the funeral had to be organized… o.k. Sabine has two elder brothers, but one of them "left" the family years ago, came only back to his mother just before she dyed and to the funeral. And the other is not so easy to cooperate with. But I must say, he looked after all the financial and governmental "stuff", which is a lot!

 

All in all, we spent between June and September more than half the time in Basel and the rest of that time we had to look after the home in Buchs and also our log cabin.

I have to be fair to say, that not all the days we spent near Basel were sad. We enjoyed the time in our mobile home (by the way muuuch cheaper, than staying in Hotels or AirBnB…), spent evenings at or on the river Rhein in Basel.

Nov. 14th our friend Heinz Gassner turned 70 and he invited to a party under the motto "the seventies":

Log cabin Days January 2023

 Very unusual: There is no snow around (the cabin is 1'450 metres above sea level). I enjoy those days on my own, can spoil myself with meals that we normally do not cook. Like Borschtsch (my friend Ollie from Chippenham told me about this). And I can do "woodwork" in our little forest. Here some pictures: No snow at all! The water from our well is running perfectly   Borschtsch cooked at the Outdoor citchen These tilted alder trees will be cut     Fully equiped with security helmet; -boots -and trousers  Part of the job of the first "working day" done    Second working-day: The logs have to be split up with a splitting- and a sledge hammer. This is hard work!   Therefore a break is necessary! Result of second working-day. I am tired but satisfied!    Pile done! Log cabin Jan 1st through Jan 6th 2024

    In winter we have to walk up for a goot half hour. with the sledges we pull the food and other necessary things up     A few days after arriving, we got some lovely pouder-snow     View from our cabin to the little village Siat, where we left our car   There it is, our car!

May 2023: Ten days in our cabin

   It was about time, to look after the surrounding of our cabin. Quite a few jobs had to be done: - The fence toward the little street had to be renewed. For this we had to make about ten new poles.  - These poles we cut in our own little wood. There are enough fir trees! - I also had to prepare the scythe by peening it (zu Deutsch: Dengeln) - Sabine looked after the little garden and the two berry-bushes Beside of all this we also had relaxing and enjoyable time.  - We spoiled ourselfes with delicious food - We observed the nature around our place - We also met some friends from up there The weather was much better than expected. When it rained, it did mainly at night. Ohe evening, there came a shower of sleet - just in time so that we could cool our white wine which adjoined the fish meal All in all a fantastic time.
